Students in both third and fourth grades will participate in the Accelerated Reader Program. ARP is a computerized reading program that allows students to choose books suitable for their reading level and in their interest areas. After reading a book, students may take a test on the computer which measures how well they comprehended the material read. The student will then receive points based on the accuracy level achieved. Each grade will determine the recommended points to be earned during each grading period. As students achieve their individual goals, they may earn bonus points as determined by each grade level. They may also trade in points earned in an ARP store at the end of each nine week grading period.
ARP has been a very successful program for elementary students at HES. The program strengthens reading skills while allowing every child to work at his or her own level. As reading skills improve, students gain confidence and recognize reading as both a beneficial and enjoyable activity. HES has hundreds of ARP titles available in the Media Center, including fiction, nonfiction, and biography. (Moss Memorial Library also has many titles available.)
