Important Things for a Successful Kindergartner

  • Identify First Name
  • Have experiences with books--as in having been read to
  • Recognize most letters of the alphabet
  • Count objects to ten
  • Understand positional and directional words--such as over and under, up and down, and more and less

Motor Skills

  • Run, walk, jump, skip, and hop
  • Use scissors and glue
  • Complete simple puzzles
  • Throw a ball
  • Zip and button clothes

Needs to Know:

  • Parents' name
  • Home phone number
  • Last five digits of their Social Security Number
  • Body parts
  • Age and birthday

Social/Emotional Development

  • Care for own personal items
  • Take care of toilet needs and use a Kleenex (blow nose)
  • Express self verbally
  • Share with others
  • Recognize authority
  • Get along with others
  • Work independently
  • Help with family chores
  • Clean up after self
  • Know gender
